I Stand At The Door

    I Stand at the Door

By Sam Shoemaker (from the Oxford Group)

    I stand by the door.
I neither go to far in, nor stay to far out.
The door is the most important door in the world -
It is the door through which men walk when they find God.
There is no use my going way inside and staying there,
When so many are still outside and they, as much as I,
Crave to know where the door is.
And all that so many ever find
Is only the wall where the door ought to be.
They creep along the wall like blind men,
    With outstretched, groping hands,
Feeling for a door, knowing there must be a door,
    Yet they never find it.
So I stand by the door.

The most tremendous thing in the world
Is for men to find that door - the door to God.
The most important thing that any man can do
Is to take hold of one of those blind, groping hands
And put it on the latch - the latch that only clicks
And opens to the man's own touch.

Men die outside the door, as starving beggars die
On cold nights in cruel cities in the dead of winter.
Die for want of what is within their grasp.
They live on the other side of it - live because they have not found it.

Nothing else matters compared to helping them find it,
And open it, and walk in, and find Him.
So I stand by the door.

Go in great saints; go all the way in -
Go way down into the cavernous cellars,
And way up into the spacious attics.
It is a vast, roomy house, this house where God is.
Go into the deepest of hidden casements,
Of withdrawal, of silence, of sainthood.
Some must inhabit those inner rooms
And know the depths and heights of God,
And call outside to the rest of us how wonderful it is.
Sometimes I take a deeper look in.
Sometimes venture in a little farther,
But my place seems closer to the opening.
So I stand by the door.

There is another reason why I stand there.
Some people get part way in and become afraid
    Lest God and the zeal of His house devour them;
For God is so very great and asks all of us.
And these people feel a cosmic claustrophobia
And want to get out. 'Let me out!' they cry.
And the people way inside only terrify them more.
Somebody must be by the door to tell them that they are spoiled.
For the old life, they have seen too much:
One taste of God and nothing but God will do any more.
Somebody must be watching for the frightened
Who seek to sneak out just where they came in,
To tell them how much better it is inside.
The people too far in do not see how near these are
To leaving - preoccupied with the wonder of it all.
Somebody must watch for those who have entered the door
But would like to run away. So for them too,
    I stand by the door.

I admire the people who go way in.
But I wish they would not forget how it was
Before they got in. Then they would be able to help
The people who have not yet even found the door.
Or the people who want to run away again from God.
You can go in too deeply and stay in too long
And forget the people outside the door.
As for me, I shall take my old accustomed place,
Near enough to God to hear Him and know He is there,
But not so far from men as not to hear them,
And remember they are there too.

    Where? Outside the door -
Thousands of them. Millions of them.
But - more important for me -
One of them, two of them, ten of them.
Whose hands I am intended to put on the latch.
So I shall stand by the door and wait
    For those who seek it.

    'I had rather be a door-keeper
So I stand by the door.

Nearing Home

Finished a book tonight, "Nearing Home" by Billy Graham. The subtitle of this book states, "Life, Faith, and Finishing Well".

My wife has been asking why I decided to read this book right now, given my age and stage of life it seemed odd. However,  I would summarize my reasoning for reading this book with a line from the first chapter. On page 4 Billy Graham writes "I wonder. What home are you preparing for?"

As a follower of Christ, I am called to prepare for my heavenly home with The Lord. As a husband and a father, I am called to prepare my family for their heavenly home with The Lord.  As a pastor, I am called to prepare the people in my church for their heavenly home with The Lord. In every area, my call is to prepare.

So, ask yourself, what home are you preparing for?

Revelation 19

Revelation chapter 19 is the first - and only place - that "Hallelujah" is found in the New Testament. Four times, in fact, within six verses. As all of heaven cries out in adoration and worship of God, "Hallelujah".

In Revelation. 19:6-7, John writes,
Then I heard what sounded like a great multitude, like the roar of rushing waters and like loud peals of thunder, shouting: “Hallelujah! For our Lord God Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and be glad and give him glory!

But it's not simply the worship of "Hallelujah" that brings me excitment as I read Revelation 19 and it's not just the knowledge that all of heaven unites in this cry of celebration. What brings the most joy to my heart is the occasion of this great heavenly praise.

John continues in Revelation 19:7-8,
For the wedding of the Lamb has come, and his bride has made herself ready. Fine linen, bright and clean, was given her to wear.

This is the wedding day of Jesus Christ, the day when The Church is united with Christ in heaven for all of eternity.

This passage speaks of the bride (The Church) being made ready. Furthermore, we read of The Church is given fine, perfectly clean, linen to wear for this wedding day.

Many brides spend weeks, months - even years - to choose their wedding dress. I've even heard of shows devoted to saying "yes to the dress". So I know that choosing the perfect wedding dress is highly important to the bride. Yet this verse states that the perfect wedding gown will be presented to us on the day that we are united with Christ.

And still, it's not that simple.

You see, the final portion of verse 8 tells us more. Fine linen stands for the righteous acts of God’s holy people.

Let's read Revelation19:6-8 in the English Standard version. Then I heard what seemed to be the voice of a great multitude, like the roar of many waters and like the sound of mighty peals of thunder, crying out,
“Hallelujah!
For the Lord our God the Almighty reigns. Let us rejoice and exult and give him the glory, for the marriage of the Lamb has come, and his Bride has made herself ready; it was granted her to clothe herself with fine linen, bright and pure”— for the fine linen is the righteous deeds of the saints.

Did you catch that last phrase? The wedding gown that we are "granted to wear" on the great wedding day - when we - The Church - are united with Christwill be our own "righteous deeds".

As The Church we are called to be prepared for the day we are united with Christ. Likewise, it is through our righteous deeds that our wedding gown is being prepared as a perfect and spotless robe.

So Church, let us prepare. Prepare The Way.

The Kingdom of Heaven

Since a very young age, I was taught The Lord's Prayer. I have particularly found memories of saying The Lord's Prayer when we would gather at my grandparents for a special meal - for holidays or special celebrations.

Our Father, which art in heaven,
Hallowed be thy Name.
Thy Kingdom come.
Thy will be done in earth,
As it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
As we forgive them that trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
But deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
The power, and the glory,
For ever and ever.
Amen.

The other day I was meditating on the words of The Lord's Prayer, specifically on the phrase Thy  Kingdom come.

John the baptist had a single message that he repeated throughout his ministry
  • Matthew 3:2; Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.
  • Mark 1:15; The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!

Likewise, Jesus had a single message that He repeated throughout His ministry
  • Matthew 4:17; From that time on Jesus began to preach,“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven has come near.”
  • Luke 10:11; Yet be sure of this: The kingdom of God has come near.

Jesus even called His followers to bring this same message
  • Matthew 10:7; As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’

In Matthew 5, Jesus begins His most famous teaching, “The Sermon on the Mount”, and He begins by announcing various blessings to the people listening to Him.
  • The first blessing that Jesus announces relates to His Kingdom message
    • Matthew 5:3; Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
  • The last blessing that Jesus announces also relates to His Kingdom message
    • Matthew 5:10; Blessed are those who are persecuted because of righteousness, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

The way Jesus announces these blessings to the poor in spirit and he persecuted is much different than the way He was preaching – and teaching – to the masses.
  • There is a distinct difference between the knowledge that “the Kingdom of heaven is near” and this “ownership” of the Kingdom that Jesus announces to the broken and the persecuted – “theirs is the Kingdom of heaven”.

I could tell you that the Kingdom of heaven is near, and you may believe me, but that won’t make a difference in your life.

John 3:3; Very truly I tell you, no one can see the kingdom of God unless they are born again.
  • We must SEE – recognize – the Kingdom of God by being born again

Mark 10:15; Truly I tell you, anyone who will not receive the kingdom of God like a little child will never enter it.
  • We must RECEIVE – acknowledge and accept – the Kingdom of God
  • We must ENTER the Kingdom of God – but how?

John 3:5; Very truly I tell you, no one can enter the kingdom of God unless they are born of water and the Spirit.
  • We must ENTER the Kingdom of God by being born of water and spirit – transformation

Matthew 7:21; Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father who is in heaven.
  • We must ENTER the Kingdom of God by doing the will of God, our Father

Acts 14:22; We must go through many hardships to enter the kingdom of God
  • We must ENTER the Kingdom of God by going through hardships and persecution

Matthew 5:20; For I tell you that unless your righteousness surpasses that of the Pharisees and the teachers of the law, you will certainly not enter the kingdom of heaven.
  • We must ENTER the Kingdom of God by accepting Christ’s righteousness as ours

1 Corinthians 6:9; Wrongdoers will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived:Neither the sexually immoral nor idolaters nor adulterers nor men who have sex with men nor thieves nor the greedy nor drunkards nor slanderers nor swindlers will inherit the kingdom of God.
  • We will INHERIT the Kingdom of God when we become righteous through Christ

1 Corinthians 15:50; Flesh and blood cannot inherit the kingdom of God, nor does the perishable inherit the imperishable.
  • We cannot INHERIT the Kingdom of God unless we are fully transformed by God

The message for us, today, is simple; the Kingdom of heaven is near
  • We must first SEE IT
  • Then we are able to RECEIVE IT
  • We must then ENTER IT
  • So that we may INHERIT IT

Morning Star's Fall

Once upon a time everything in the universe was perfect!

There was a good King who ruled from His Throne.

He was worshiped, and there was no one or no thing like Him.

He had one Son and He was just as good as His Father, the King.

When the King was worshiped, His Son was worshiped too.

Everyone in the Kingdom served them – not because they had to but because they wanted to – out of love for the King and His Son.

The Father and Son had raised up three worshipers above the rest; their names were “Gift, Morning Star, and Messenger”.

Everything in the universe was perfect.

When The King and His Son were worshiped, Gift, Morning Star, and Messenger would worship them together with all the other worshipers

Yet Morning Star began to wonder why he wasn’t being worshiped.

And Morning Star began to look down on The King’s Son.

He asked himself why The King’s Son was given more honor than him.

One afternoon Morning Star stood up to the King and to His Son.

Morning Star refused to worship The King and rebelled against Him.

Pride had built up in Morning Star, he thought he deserved to be King.

He told The King to step down, to get off His throne and let him rule.

The King had to cast Morning Star out of the perfect Kingdom where Morning Star remains even today – allowing his pride to control him.

The prophet Isaiah wrote about Morning Star; How you have fallen from heaven,

morning star, son of the dawn! You have been cast down to the earth, you who once laid low the nations! You said in your heart, “I will ascend to the heavens; I will raise my throne above the stars of God; I will sit enthroned on the mount of assembly, on the utmost heights of Mount Zaphon. I will ascend above the tops of the clouds; I will make myself like the Most High.” But you are brought down to the realm of the dead to the depths of the pit. (Isaiah 14:12-15)

Morning Star now goes by a different name – we know him as Satan. Satan tries to tell us that we deserve more than we have. Satan tries to tell us that we are more important than others. Satan tries to tell us that we are more important than God.

Life After Birth

A friend sent this my direction this morning. I thought it was worth sharing:

In a mother’s womb were two babies.  One asked the other, “do you believe in life after delivery?”

The  other replies “ Why, of course. There has to be something after delivery. Maybe we are here to prepare ourselves for what will be later.”

“ Nonsense,” says the other.  “There is no life after delivery. What would that life be”? I don’t know, but there will be more light than here. Maybe we will walk with our legs and eat from our mouths.”

The other says, “This is absurd! Walking is impossible. And eat with our mouths? Ridiculous. The umbilical cord supplies nutrition.  Life after deliver is to be excluded.  The umbilical cord is too short.”

“ I think there is something and maybe it’s different than it is here,” the other replies.

“No one has ever come back from there. Delivery is the end of life, and in the after-delivery it is nothing but darkness and anxiety and it takes us nowhere.”

“Well, I don’t know,” says the other, “but certainly we’ll see mother and she will take care of us.”
Mother?? You believe in Mother? Where is she now?”

“She is all around us. It is in her that we live. Without her, there would not be this world.”
“I don’t see her, so it’s only logical that she doesn’t exist.”

To which the other replies, “Sometimes when you’re in silence, you can hear her. You can perceive her. I believe there is a reality after delivery and we are here too prepare ourselves for that reality.”

Life Perspective

In Luke 6: 20-26 Jesus gives us a new - or different - perspective for how we are to live our lives on earth.
Looking at his disciples, he said:
“Blessed are you who are poor,  for yours is the kingdom of God.  Blessed are you who hunger now, for you will be satisfied. Blessed are you who weep now, for you will laugh.  Blessed are you when people hate you, when they exclude you and insult you and reject your name as evil, because of the Son of Man.
“Rejoice in that day and leap for joy, because great is your reward in heaven. For that is how their ancestors treated the prophets.
“But woe to you who are rich, for you have already received your comfort. Woe to you who are well fed now, for you will go hungry. Woe to you who laugh now, for you will mourn and weep. Woe to you when everyone speaks well of you, for that is how their ancestors treated the false prophets.
We are blessed when we are poor, and pitied when we are rich.
We are blessed when we are hungry, and pitied when we are well fed.
We are blessed when we weep, and pitied when we laugh.
We are blessed when we are hated, and pitied when we are admired.

This should open our eyes to the way we live today - perhaps we are a bit too selfish or spoiled in what we expect or what we think we deserve. Likewise, this should open our eyes to how we react to the way God answers our every need - being poor, hungry, and hated is an opportunity for us to express joy and store up for ourselves more treasure in our eternal home.

Live For Now

That is stupid!

We have been offered an eternal future  in Jesus Christ. We have provided an eternal home in heaven. We have been promised an eternal hope. Jesus Christ came and lived a perfect life on earth to show us how we are to live. Jesus Christ died a gruesome death on the cross to pay the penalty for our sins. Jesus Christ has risen from the grave to bring us a new and everlasting life. Jesus Christ ascended into heaven to preparing a place for us.

"Live for Now"

That is stupid!

I don’t want to live for now.   I want to live for eternity.

Twas' 11 days before Christmas

Twas' 11 days before Christmas, around 9:38
when 20 beautiful children stormed through heaven's gate.
their smiles were contagious, their laughter filled the air.
they could hardly believe all the beauty they saw there.
they were filled with such joy, they didn't know what to say.
they remembered nothing of what had happened earlier that day.
"where are we?" asked a little girl, as quiet as a mouse.
"this is heaven." declared a small boy. "we're spending Christmas at God's house."
when what to their wondering eyes did appear,
but Jesus, their savior, the children gathered near.
He looked at them and smiled, and they smiled just the same.
then He opened His arms and He called them by name.
and in that moment was joy, that only heaven can bring
those children all flew into the arms of their King
and as they lingered in the warmth of His embrace,
one small girl turned and looked at Jesus' face.
and as if He could read all the questions she had
He gently whispered to her, "I'll take care of mom and dad."
then He looked down on earth, the world far below
He saw all of the hurt, the sorrow, and woe
then He closed His eyes and He outstretched His hand,
"Let My power and presence re-enter this land!"
"may this country be delivered from the hands of fools"
"I'm taking back my nation. I'm taking back my schools!"
then He and the children stood up without a sound.
"come now my children, let me show you around."
excitement filled the space, some skipped and some ran.
all displaying enthusiasm that only a small child can.
and i heard Him proclaim as He walked out of sight,
"in the midst of this darkness, I AM STILL THE LIGHT."

Preparing for Victory

My wife and I have spent much of the week cleaning, cooking, and preparing for an open house that we are hosting tomorrow evening. We have done all of these special preparations because we want our home and to look its best and we want to provide the best atmosphere for our guests. But, in spite of all the preparations that are required for tomorrow evening, I paused for a few hours tonight to enjoy a college basketball game. My Indiana Hoosiers were hosting the Kentucky Wildcats, who are currently ranked number one in the nation.

It was quite a game and I am still reeling from the excitement after my Hoosiers pulled off a win tonight. Although the Hoosiers played at home and had a huge crowd advantage in the game, it was still a very difficult game in which a win would not have been possible if they had not come out with a plan and a desire to win.

After the game I went back to work, sweeping and mopping the floor in the kitchen and began to think, to think about preparing. The Hoosiers had to prepare for the game this evening and I have to prepare for our guests tomorrow night. In the same way, much of my job is about preparing - preparing individuals for heaven. Likewise, much of our life is about preparing - preparing for eternity.

Mercy is a means of preparing; Ephesians 2:3-5 says: "All of us also lived among them at one time, gratifying the cravings of our flesh and following its desires and thoughts. Like the rest, we were by nature deserving of wrath. But because of his great love for us, God, who is rich in mercy, made us alive with Christ even when we were dead in transgressions—it is by grace you have been saved.

Grace is a means of preparing; Romans 3:23-24 says: "for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and all are justified freely by his grace through the redemption that came by Christ Jesus." Through the grace of Christ Jesus we are being prepared for an eternity with Him where there will be no more sin and no more suffering.

Repentance is a means of preparing; when we ask forgiveness for our sins and we turn from our wicked ways God promises to forgive us (2 Chronicles 7:14), yet if we turn back to sin God promises that He will still remain forgiving and will accept us if we repent again (Matthew 18:20-22)

Worship is a means of preparing; as we worship as individuals we prepare for the day when every knee will bow and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord (Philippians 2:10-11), as we worship together we prepare for an eternity when we will gather with all tribes and peoples to worship The God that is worthy of our worship (Revelation).

In all these things, in all these ways, God is working to prepare us for an eternity in heaven that He desires to spread with us as His children. As we think of God's mercy and His grace, as we consider our repentance to and our worship of God, let us also focus on the preparation that God has for us and how we can best prepare for the eternity that He is preparing for us.

In John 14:2-3, Jesus says: "My Father’s house has many rooms; if that were not so, would I have told you that I am going there to prepare a place for you? And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to be with me that you also may be where I am."

Thanking God For Death

I was reading from Genesis chapter 3 this morning, at the end of this chapter God kicks Adam and Eve out of the Garden of Eden after they disobey and eat from the tree if good and evil, their banishment from the Garden was part of their discipline.

Verses 22 to 24 follow this punishment;

And the Lord God said, “The man has now become like one of us, knowing good and evil. He must not be allowed to reach out his hand and take also from the tree of life and eat, and live forever.” So the Lord God banished him from the Garden of Eden to work the ground from which he had been taken. After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.

First, it amazes me the God was talking to another being in verse 22. We may assume that God is speaking with Christ or with the Holy Spirit. I can't quite wrap my head around that!

But, what really amazes me is that God still loves and care for mankind - and for us - in this moment where He was the most betrayed and forsaken.

We could certainly understand God's frustration with Adam and Eve, they had ignored and broken the one and only rule that He had given them, they had ruined paradise! Frustration, even anger could be understood at this moment.

But God, in His merciful, compassionate, loving way, disciplines His children, and then patiently takes steps to care for and to protect us from ourselves and from any future harm.

How, you may ask. God protected us by taking away eternal life on this earth and in this current, tainted, sinful world. Thanks to this action we are able to live our lives now in a state of preparation for an eternal future glory with God, our Father. And, we are able to trust - with a hope and an assurance - in perfection waiting for those of us who believe and obey Jesus Christ.

So, the next time you consider death, thank God for it, and consider what is waiting for you on the other side.

Martyr's Song by Todd Agnew

I was cleaning the car the other day and this song began to play. I was reminded by the powerful lyrics of God's true love for His creation and was inspired by the message of the song to press on until that day when I see Him face to face, when I feal His embrace, and when I hear Him welcome me home.

I've been waiting to dance with you
In fields full of colors you've never seen
I've been waiting to show you beauty
You never dreamed that's always been in you
I've been waiting to see you tremble as you're embraced
By a world saturated with my love
I've been waiting for the day when at last I get to say
My child you are finally home

Sing O son of Zion
Shout O child of mine
Rejoice with all your heart and soul and mind
For you are finally home

I've been waiting to watch you realize
What all your longing was for
I've been waiting to show you the thread of grace
That ran through all your pain
I've been waiting to let you drink the water of which
Your greatest joy on earth was just a taste
I've been waiting for the day when at last I get to say
My child you are finally home

Sing O son of Zion
Shout O child of mine
Rejoice with all your heart and soul and mind
Sing O daughter of Zion
Cry out O child of mine
Dance with all the strength that you can find
For you are finally home

Every tear you cried dried in the palm of my hand
Every lonely hour was by my side
every loved one lost, every river crossed
Every moment, every hour was pointing to this day
I've been longing for this day
